Pulmen is a young company in Spain with a lot of experience. The Madrid-based digital print outlet was only established in 2012, but is run by executives each with more than 25 years of service in the Graphic Arts sector. With a staff of 20 employees, the company has traditionally operated successfully in the book market, but recent investments have taken it into the worlds of short run packaging and commercial print. To facilitate the company’s diversification, in the last two years Pulmen has renewed its entire digital printing press and binding capacity, investing more than €2.5 million in four latest generation Konica Minolta systems, a JetVarnish 3D One digital embellishment press, a Screen inkjet press and CP Bourg finishing.

Quality and creativity with AccurioPress C14000 and MGI JetVarnish 3D One

In uncertain business times like those engendered by COVID-19, many businesses might have retreated to protect what they have. Not so Pulmen. The Madrid company has a reputation for innovation and investment in R&D, and it has used that to build a strong presence in the book publishing market. However, during the last two years it has invested heavily in new digital printing and finishing equipment – predominantly from Konica Minolta – with the intention of breaking into new markets. The company’s ability to cater for the fast-evolving book sector stands it in good stead for its new ventures, which have seen it enter the short run packaging and digital sheet embellishment markets. Pulmen took these steps to safeguard its future. Although the pandemic has left much uncertainty, the firm was clear that it needed to open up new types of market, including packaging for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food.

Helping it to meet these needs are two Konica Minolta AccurioPress C14000 toner presses, capable of unprecedented print quality on a huge range of media, up to 450 gsm in weight, with top print speeds of 140 A4 pages per minute. This is Konica Minolta’s most advanced technology in cut-sheet digital printing. In support of the AccurioPress C14000s, Pulmen also has two further highly advanced Konica Minolta presses – the AccurioPress C6100 and the AccurioPress 2250. Mindful that print service providers need to deliver something different to stand out in the market today, the company has also invested in a JetVarnish 3D One digital embellishment system, also supplied by Konica Minolta. This innovative technology gives printed items the ‘wow’ factor. It enables Pulmen to produce added value printing featuring both personalisation and special effects across all of the markets it serves. The result will be print that is unique, and that will grab the customers’ attention immediately, leading to increased sales, customer retention, recognition and loyalty.

Pulmen teamed up with its strategic partner Konica Minolta for a unique project in November 2020, which illustrated the company’s new capabilities. The project saw the production of pharmaceutical packaging incorporating Braille and cosmetic cases in different media weights being streamed live for customers to watch. Printed on the Konica Minolta AccurioPress C14000, with 3D and special textures from the JetVarnish 3D One, the project showcased perfectly that Pulmen is now not only a book printing expert, but also a print provider of many dimensions.

Ever since we started, we have relied on Konica Minolta, a company that has been true partner. With the fantastic new equipment we have acquired, not only will we be able to provide added value to books within the publishing market, but we will also be in a position to enter the commercial printing and small packaging market, with a focus on embellishment. The JetVarnish 3D One is a key piece of equipment in this area.
